I had the good fortune of taking one of Brian Mulligan’s courses in the mid 1990’s and applied it immediately to my human physical therapy patients. Brian Mulligan is a physical therapist from New Zealand who had developed concepts that have changed the method of manual therapy for the physical therapy world.
I loved the concepts and everything seemed so natural. At the same time I was in the infancy stages of working with dogs. The application of Brian’s concept also seemed to naturally apply to dogs. Of course, the anatomy was different. But with my knowledge of canine anatomy, I was able to apply the techniques with success to my canine clients.
In October of 2000, Brian conducted the first international symposium on his principles and treatment techniques. And I was honored to be one of the speakers. The rest of the speakers were all talking about his applications to people, so I was the ‘odd man out’ so to speak. I was also quite nervous to be presenting my principles in front of Brian for the first time. When I was through with my talk, Brian raised his hand and asked if the same concepts could be applied to lambs – he is from New Zealand. We all laughed and I was thrilled to have shared the information with my physical therapy colleagues.
I have continued to utilize Brian’s techniques on my canine patients with success. His techniques are just terrific and it is fantastic to apply them to other animals. I was honored yet again when Brian asked me to be part of the educational series and present the knowledge on an online course. The course was so fun to produce and it was great to work with Brian again.
